Manufacture Reuge is a historic Swiss "Maison" based in Sainte-Croix, in the Jura region long known for precision watchmaking and mechanical music. The company was founded in 1865 by Charles Reuge, who opened a workshop to create, sell, and repair musical pocket watches and began integrating miniature comb-and-cylinder music mechanisms into watch movements. As demand grew, the workshop expanded into a factory and was registered as Reuge S.
By the late 19th century it produced not only the musical movements but also the objects that held them-ranging from pocket watches to powder compacts and cigar lighters-alongside larger music boxes. Reuge later built its landmark Sainte-Croix factory in 1930 and grew into a leading name in luxury mechanical music. In 1960, it broadened its creations further by revitalizing mechanical singing bird automata through acquisitions such as Bontems (and later Eschle). Today, Reuge continues to craft high-end Swiss music boxes and singing bird automata, preserving this specialized know-how in Sainte-Croix.
