Reuge Sante-Croix Swiss 36 Note Music Box ROMANCE San Francisco Music Box Co. One of the more scarce 36 note mechanisms, "Unforgettable" plays in this previously owned, perfectly lovely Vintage Crystal Music Box It's footprint measures 6 1/2 " x 5 " and stands 2 1/2 high. Encased in crystal, is a Swiss, Romance movement otherwise called a mechanism or tune, made by Reuge. Reuge made the Romance movements identical to their Reuge mechanisms in every way (except for the engraved name on the main spring housing).
It's purpose was to allow other companies to use the Reuge mechanism in their own boxes but at the same time establish a difference. The Reuge Mechanism would be used only to install into a cabinet at the Reuge Factory.
It may have worked well at first but for a while, you couldn't trust that so called fact because there were so many loose Reuge movements still available that could be placed in a "Rogue" (not Reuge) box. Today, however, current factory finished Reuge products are made to prevent cannibalization or at least, leave tell-tale signs of such. This piece is dated 1989. It has ornate feet, making it somewhat reminiscent of the Reuge Dauphin crystal cabinets. The bottom of the box has 2 paper labels, The San Francisco Music Box Co which has been mostly removed & Made in Taiwan R.
