By REUGE MUSIC, Sainte Croix, Switzerland. Wood box with locking domed lid (key absent). Cast metal paw feet, escutcheon and swing handles.
The lid and 3 sides of the box are decorated with decoupage pastoral scenes and gilt accents. Red fabric-lined interior with removable bottom pad. With the bottom pad removed the 4 tune, 50 tone mechanism is visible beneath a yellow acrylic window. Reuge label on bottom: "Reuge Music - Sainte Croix, Switzerland - The Sound of Music, Richard Rodgers - Do Re Mi, Richard Rodgers - Edelweiss, Richard Rodgers - Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Richard Rodgers - 45072 - CH 4/50".
Other maker's marks: "Reuge Music" on winder; "Reuge Sainte Croix Switzerland" on mechanism; bottom impressed "Made in Switzerland". The mechanism is wound on bottom. When wound, the music box plays 4 songs in succession as long as the lid is open. Closing the lid pauses the music. The music resumes in the same spot when the lid is reopened.
The hinge appears to have 2 long flat "blades" slotted vertically into the lid and the back side of the box and secured with glue only. The glue that secured the lower hinge blade into the back side of the box has failed with age. Although this blade fits snugly into its slot it I noticed that it can be pushed/pulled out. I will leave it to the new owner to resecure this part of the hinge with an adhesive of their choice. Note that this is not conspicuous and the box is still usable as is -- the hinge wants to stay in place -- but it is something to be aware of.
Also note that there is no damage or wear to the hinge slots themselves. Otherwise the box is in excellent original cosmetic condition with no damage and no significant wear. No restorations / repairs / touch ups.No dings, dents, bends, breaks, cracks, bruises, chips, splits, separations. No pry marks, tool marks, scrapes. No significant scratches or rubs. Very clean as found inside and out.
Nothing at all significant or conspicuous. The mechanism functions as designed with no issues. Plays strong and tunefully and with no hesitancy. The mechanism is visually clean as found with no grime, pitting, oxidation. I see no evidence the mechanism has ever been serviced.
