Ornate Marquetry Reuge Music Box Phantom of the Opera. This lovely piece has has been hand worked with intricate inlay detail. It was made by Reuge makers of exquisite luxury music boxes. The company was founded in 1865 by Charles Reuge who began by crafting tiny musical box movements into pocket watches. His workshop was in Sainte Croix Switzerland where the company still manufactures today.
Reuge is known world wide for their music boxes and singing birds. These pieces become family heirlooms.
The box has fine Italian Marquetry to the top with burr walnut sides. The box it self is walnut. The interior has a 36 key music box which plays three tunes from Phantom of the Opera. There is a glass hinged top over the movement.
The winding key is the underside of th base and the'on' switch is the gold button the front which is pressed to the right to play. The button is moved to the left to stop but it will only stop after the end of the phrase. This music box is in fine condition. We do see a small pale mark to the top as shown but this mark is beneath the lacquer.
The gold'on' button shows the tiniest bit of lacquer loss to the rim so the brass has darkened. The 36 key music boxes were discontinued by Reuge as they concentrated on their larger music movement boxes. The box is 175mm x 110mm x 65mm tall.
