This is a rare, used Reuge interchangeable music box. It sounds amazing in person, as all the 72-note Reuge boxes do. I just had this sent for service to tune and replace the dampers on the 72-note comb (see pics for service receipt). This is a full 72-note Reuge with 5 cylinders. Each cylinder plays 3 full-length aires, shifting the cylinder each time (see video link, below). Please see the tune list in the photo.
The corners of the box have damage, as seen in the photos. This is cosmetic only, and the box functions perfectly.
The wood is Rose wo0d, and it has a high gloss, piano finish. In addition to the damage shown in the photos, there's some slight swirls you can see in the finish under direct light, nothing you won't see on other used, fine music boxes of this age. The brass cylinders have a few spots of light tarnish. This is common on this age of box.
It's better to not try and clean this off, as you risk damage to the fragile pins. I do not have the key for this box, sorry about that.
Please be advised, (and given my recent experience), this box itself is NOT perfect. Please study the photos carefully, they are a part of this listing and constitute a fair description of this music box. You may see a video of this music box at the following link.
I believe this model was produced by Reuge from the mid-80s to the late 90s or early 2000s. The serial number suggests this is a later version.
This is the first one I've seen that has a full-color tune label. Others have single color reproductions. I understand these full-color versions were only produced for a short time at Reuge, and are considered desireable to collectors. I've lowered the price on this box to account for the damaged shown. This is an amazing opportunity to own a 72-note Reuge interchangeable for an unheard of price. See my feedback for many high-end item sales, including other Reuge boxes. I'm offering a free return with this item. Thanks, and I'll be happy to answer any questions.
If you're not aware, music box combs (the part that is plucked to generate sound) include a component called a "damper". On this vintage of Reuge music box, these are hard-plastic parts attached to the bottom of each lame (or tooth) Note that older boxes often used small feathers for the same purpose. These dampers stop the lame from vibrating just before they're plucked by the next pin on the cylinder, preventing buzzing and possible damage to the pins. Dampers are WEAR ITEMS on a music box, and a box of this age should be carefully inspected, and the dampers replaced if needed. Given the value of this box, I had this sent to the only Reuge USA technican and the dampers replaced prior to this sale.
